Where is the place named 'Straw'?
« on: Friday 01 May 15 20:41 BST (UK) »
Some of my relatives records refer to a place named Straw but I cannot find where this is exactly. The IreAtlas Townland Database does not list it. It was in Gortin registration district and my family lived in the Ardstraw and Bodoney parishes. Could it refer to Ardstraw village? Any help with this would be great, please.

There is also a townland called Straw just over the county border (in County Londonderry) in the civil parish of Ballynascreen.

For your bearings, Bodoney Lower and Upper civil parishes are nos. 8 and 9, Ardstraw civil parish is no. 4 and Kildress civil parish is no. 29 in the following link:

Ballynascreen civil parish is no. 9 in the following link:

Thank you both for your help. I think that must be it, gaffy. Corick, which is in the same civil parish, is given in other records. It confused me how they were both registered in Gortin, though.

Kind regards

The boundaries of Registration Districts followed those of the Poor Law Unions established under the Poor Law Act of 1838.  Those boundaries didn't align to County boundaries, so Registration Districts (and their Subdistricts) can lie in several Counties.  Likewise they don't respect Civil Parish boundaries.

I wasn't convinced so I've done a little research and found that Straw was actually another name for Stra(w)letterdallan and Corrick another name for neighbouring Cor(r)ickmore.

All those that lived in Straletterdallan in the 1911 census that still lived there in 1912 when they signed the Ulster Convenant/Declaration, give their address as 'Straw' and a few as 'Strawletterdallan'. It is the same with Corrickmore but every single person had given their address as 'Corrick' when they signed it.

Hopefully this clears up any confusion for others with ancestors from these townlands.
