Rosina Whenham nee Douglass of Brighton
« on: Saturday 02 May 15 03:33 BST (UK) »
I am trying to help a friend trace Rosina Whenham who was married to a James Whenham.  We have the death certificates which state that James died 18 May 1893 in Brighton aged 56 years and Rosina died 10 September 1900 aged 57 years.
The 1871 census shows them living in Brighton with Rosina aged 28 years.  In 1891 they are still both in Brighton but Rosina now shown as Rosena aged 50 years.  Her birthplace is always shown as Brighton.
It rather looks like James was married before - in 1858 at Uckfield/Fletching to a Mary Ann Legg.   His marriage to Rosina has been hard to find but Family Search say that he either married Mary Worsford or Rosina Douglass in Dorking during the last quarter of 1864.   FreeBMD only shows Mary Worsford in a marriage search that year for James, and when I looked up Rosina's marriage in FreeBMD it has Dover with an incomplete Vol and Page No - No spouse found.
In 1861 on FreeCen I found Rose Douglass an unmarried Servant aged 16 years living a family called Medley at 8 Ashton Street Brighton.   So we have 1841, 1843 and 1845 as possible birth years.
I cannot find any good match in the 1851 census on Family Search or UKCensusonline.  Can anyone help please check and see if she was in Brighton that year?

I would say that the marriage record for Rosina Douglass is the  one that matches James Whenham's record. Looking at the original image Rosina's entry has been handwritten and squeezed in between the lines but I would say the page number matches that of James page no 229
The first two numbers are definitely 22.

The only birth record I can see on FreeBMD 1841 - 1846 is

Births March 1/4 1846 Rosina Maria Douglass   Marylebone vol 1 page 235
Wrong county but if she moved when she was very young then she may think she was born Brighton.

Many Thanks Crisane.   I was thinking along the lines of her being born elsewhere and not knowing it.     Family Search is really messed up as well - I tried to pin down the church in Dorking by looking at Batch Numbers for Dorking and found nothing.   But then I came across a John Wenham marrying a Mary Ann Sherlock, yet Free BMD same quarter have her marrying a George Pullinger.
But you have at least found that Rosina's name was squeezed in so I think that confirms her marriage to James Wenham in Dorking.

There appears to be a Rosina Douglass born Paddington in 1846 living in St Marylebone in 1861, and a Rose Douglass born Brighton 1845 living in Brighton in 1861.  So 2 different people.

1861 shows sister Barbara (above) was born in Brighton, so likely Rosy was too  :)

Thank you so much Chempat and Jo.   At least we can rule out the Marylebone Rosina.   As much as I like the 3 year old Rosy in Hastings ( because of the Borthwick connection) that would put her birth year as late as 1848.   I don't doubt that she was unsure of her age since she said 28 in 1871 and 50 in 1891, but that would make the range of birth years extend from 1841 to 1848.
The Witney Rose Ann registered in 1843 is interesting and I suspect that she could be the same as the Rosanna I found in Family Search born October 1841 and christened January 1842 in Eynsham - 5 miles from Witney.    These were early years for compulsory registration so it could be that her mother Rebecca (no father shown) didn't register her child until the end of 1843.
