Okay, we can rule out the Brighthampton Rose as I just found her as an unmarried servant in 1871  ???

Thanks again Jo.    I have suggested to our friend Thelma who asked me to help with this, that her next step will be the marriage certificate.    Looks like that will now be the only way to sort out the right Rosina/Rose.
On her notes to me, Thelma jotted down "I've got James' soldier's number & regiment stationed at Seelapore E.Indies with the 48th foot.  Private 3072 but as my main search is for Rosina's family I'll rather have that, I'm just at a dead end!"
Well we have gone further since a couple of days ago she didn't know that Rosina's name was Douglas and was concentrating on the June 1858 marriage in Uckfield which I think must have been an earlier marriage or a different James Whenham.    I'll see if I can find out when he was in the army.  Thanks Again, Malcolm

In the 1891 census there is a James Whenham age 21 born Brighton Sussex, a private in the Infantry, stationed at Chatham Kent.
He is too young to be Rosina's husband though it could be their son showing in the 1871 census as born Dorking c1867 but they are living in Brighton so he may think he was born there.

There is a James Whenham on the Worldwide Army Index in 1861 on FindMyPast but I can only do a basic search.

Well that is fantastic Crisane and Jo.    This adds tremendous weight to the marriage of James to Rosina being that one in Dorking.   It just goes to show that one has to shine the light on either side of the main focus to see what is in the shadows.
  Thanks again, Malcolm

I think this helps us rule out the other James Whenham who married in Uckfield in 1858.

In the 1871 census James' birthplace is shown as Westminster, Middlesex.  We already knew that was wrong and that it was Westmeston, Sussex.    So Ditchling confirms it because it is right next to Westmeston.
