Fitzsimmons (Divan) McLaughlin
« on: Sunday 03 May 15 11:15 BST (UK) »
Looking for information on Mary Fitzsimmons, b 1834, daughter of Thomas Fitzsimmons and Helen Divan, who married Neil/Cornelius McLaughlin 27 December 1852 at St Margaret's Catholic Church, Ayr.

Witnesses to the wedding were Anne Fitzsimmons and Edward McSherry???

Mary and Neil/Cornelius McLaughlin had a son Patrick, born September 8, 1856, baptised September 11, 1856. Sponsors Thomas Fitzsimmons and Ellen Divan.

Trying to find out fate of family. Did Cornelius, Mary and Patrick migrate to Australia before 1861 and is Cornelius the widower who married Jessie Simpson at Wentworth NSW in 1861. Any info welcome.

Hi nanctown

Why the reference to Neil or Cornelious? They are not normally first names that are connected (ahhh...they are variants! www.whatsinaname.net/male-names/Cornelius.html).

Do you have any indication on the birth year of Cornelious and also his occupation? Have you found him in 1851 census in Scotland?

From all the references you mention, looks like info is more certain regarding Mary Fitzsimmons.

Can't easily see a death for Mary in Scotland on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk  Nor any more children born to them after 1856 and the birth you have of son Patrick https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYBJ-LJC

Thanks for your help, Monica.

Cornelius is used in the registration of Patrick's birth and Neil is used at the marriage and baptism.

The Cornelius McLaughlin (multiple spellings used) I'm looking for was b about 1834 in Ireland, Donegal or Londonderry, to a James McLaughlin and a Mary Harkin. Cornelius's father died in Glasgow in 1858 and his sister Sarah married a William McGinlay before dying in Partick in 1861.

The Neil/Cornelius I'm looking for married July 1861 in Australia as a widower. His wife in Australia (my great-great grandmother) appeared to raise a boy she didn't give birth to so I'm trying to find out if this is Patrick and, if so, what became of him.

If they're the same person, it means Mary probably died between Patrick's birth in 1856 and Cornelius' remarriage in 1861.
