SOLVED: Tom Toorak ~ hill near Hermitage?
« on: Sunday 03 May 15 12:53 BST (UK) »
I've been reading an account of a walk to Riccarton Junction on the Waverley Route.

In the account, the walker parks his car, "turned north and ambled across the field and on to the slopes of Tom Toorak. With only a little difficulty he reached the summit, cast his eyes westward and looked at the ruins of Hermitage Castle ..."

I've looked at 6 inch and 25 inch maps to no avail.   I can find a reference to "Toorak" in the excellent Hawick Word Book but it doesn't help about location.

I'm guessing that "Tom Toorak" must be a colloquial name for a hill.  Can anyone help?

Many thanks.

Hi

Wonder if this is it on this map and zoom in, link below. The map is an area to the West of Hermitage ( I think  :) )
Located as TOLM TOURICK, it can be found to the East of the map, plus Hermitage castle is sort of due west of where he could have stood.

That's it!  And on the way to Riccarton, too.  I'd been looking much closer to the Hermitage - Whitrope road.

Mystery solved. Thank you.
