Help with a place name.....Completed
« on: Sunday 03 May 15 16:47 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to find a townland called Duntarsan.

The name is on a 1909 marriage record.

The groom was from Glasmullin (Mintiaghs or Barr of Inch Parish, Inishowen) and the bride came from Duntarsan which I assume is somewhere near Glasmullin.

I Googled and found some vague references but nothing concrete as to where it actually is.

Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

On Bill McAfee's website, Duntarsan is mentioned as being a townland in the parish of  Fahan Lower as recorded in the 1660 hearth money rolls.  He states that the present day townland name has not been identified. See entries for the surname Brien:

http://www.billmacafee.com/1660shearthmoneyrolls/1660shearthmoneyrollsulstername.pdf

In this paper from 1881 about Fahan Abbey, Dun-tarsan is described in section 28 as a quarterland.

The Donegal Resources Website has Duntarson as a quarterland in a number of different townlands (from the 1833 Tithe Applotment Books):

Thank you for your help:) I think you found exactly what I did.

I decided to bite the bullet and get a month sub on Rootsireland. I found the bride's baptism. I know it's the right one as it has a note about her marriage in 1909. Of course it didn't have any info but with her parents names I was able to find some of her siblings. It turns out they were all born in Shandrim.

I was then able to find them in the 1901 census.

Where the place Duntarsan comes from is a mystery. There are so many local names that aren't on a map. For ages I looked for a place that the locals called Rock only to discover it was actually Foffenagh ::)
