Grange/Knight ancestors, born?, married 1787, Aythorpe Roding
« on: Monday 04 May 15 05:26 BST (UK) »
A couple of years ago I was researching my Grange/Knight ancestors from Essex, England.  I've resumed searching again and I'm already stuck.  Information from a previous RootsChat thread about my ancestors:

Joseph Grange married Sarah Knight 20 February 1787, Aythorpe Roding, Essex
The witnesses at the Grange/Knight marriage were Thomas Firmin and Charles Eve

Joseph and Sarah Grange may have had the following children:
John, baptised 8-Oct-1787, Aythorpe Roding, Essex - married Ann Pryor 1815?
Mary, baptised 29-Sep-1790, Aythorpe Roding, Essex - died 1818?
Mary and her fiance, John Firmin, died from typhus fever days after their original marriage date.  :'(
Louisa, born February 18, baptised 9 March 1795, Hatfield Broad Oak, Essex
Martha, baptised 25th October, 1797, HBO - married James Mumford 1822
Peter, baptised September 16, 1801, HBO
Elizabeth, baptised December 3, 1804, HBO -married William Patmore 1824
William, born February 2nd and baptised March 1, 1808, HBO

Joseph Grange, occupation Miller, died 1832
Sarah Grange, died 1842

I have various bits of information (thanks to RootsChatters!) about Granges after 1797 and a lot of information about Martha Grange who was my direct ancestor, but unless I've missed a vital clue, I don't know how to find out anything about Joseph Grange and Sarah Knight before their marriage.  I am unable to view documents on SEAX.  Any suggestions about where I might look for records that are prior to their marriage would be greatly appreciated.  I currently have access for a worldwide subscription to a genealogy site but since I don't know where Sarah was born, I'm stuck.  Thank you very much for reading this thread.  Lisa

My last thread about Joseph Grange:

Hi Mark:

That is one site I did not try; I appreciate your help, Mark.  Thank you.   :)
(I've not used that site too much in the past.  I will have to add it to my list.)

Freereg is a bit hit and miss, but it is still being created and relies on volunteers transcribing parish records.

I do appreciate finding a new site to search, though.   :)

Using the site you mentioned, I see the following:
Marriage license
Robert Knight, HBO, Single, Butcher.  Mary Schooling, HBO, Single.
Marriage date: 27 October 1767.   St. Mary the Virgin, HBO
Witnesses:  John Schooling and Sarah Schooling.  Both signed.

I wonder if they are "my" Sarah's parents.   :-\

You may have found a connection.  Perhaps the names are just a coincidence; perhaps there is a connection.
Joseph Grange married Sarah Knight 20 February 1787, Aythorpe Roding, Essex
The witnesses at the Grange/Knight marriage were Thomas Firmin and Charles Eve

Mary, baptised 29-Sep-1790, Aythorpe Roding, Essex - died 1818?
Mary and her fiance, John Firmin, died from typhus fever days after their original marriage date.  :'(

From the previously mentioned site:
License
Thomas Firmin, HBO, Single, Shopkeeper.  Bride: Sarah Schooling, HBO, Single.
Marriage Date: 11 April 1770, St. Mary the Virgin, HBO
Witnesses:  Robert Knight, John Edwards

Ellison: Co. Wicklow/Canada       Fowley: Sligo/Canada       Furnival: Lancashire/Canada       Ibbotson: Sheffield/Canada       Lee/DeJongh: Lancashire & Cheshire       Mumford: Essex/Canada       Ovens: Ireland/Canada       Sarge: Yorkshire/Canada             Stuart: Sligo/Canada       Sullivan: Co. I'm not sure what this means, but in a newspaper article from June 1, 1792:
Sales by Auction
"...A freehold and copyhold farm, situate at Aythorp Rooting...consisting of a farm-house and 35 acres of land, let to Mr. Robert Knight, at will at 24 pounds..."

Mark, if you are able to find anything else on the other site, I would be thrilled to read about it.  Thank you again for your interest and help.  You quite possibly could have found my Knight ancestors.  :)

Good night from California.  Lisa
