Lachlan Boyd married in India
« on: Monday 04 May 15 17:04 BST (UK) »
I've found a record of Lacklan (sic) Boyd, son of Donald who married Alice Norbury Nelson in Bombay 21 Oct 1907.  Alice was a widow, maiden name Mumberson.  Lachlan was born in Fort William in 1865.

I would be grateful if anyone could tell me if there is any further information to be had.

Alice's father could be  Reuben  instead of Renbew.

That was quick!!

Was wondering why the marriage took place in Bombay when Lachlan's business interests were in Kolkata.  Yes, Alice's father was Reuben Mumberson, she came from Cockermouth, BUT what's a 'Wee Free' Scotsman doing in St Thomas cathedral, I ask  :o

Thanks everyone

Brigau, not to do with the marriage but Alice's death. Do you have this notice? www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/35005/page/6889/data.pdf

Yes, I do have that record, but thank you for looking, Monica.

Lachlan joined the firm of MacKinnon Mackenzie; two young men from Campbeltown who set up as ship brokers in Kolkata about 1847.  I have him leaving Glasgow aboard ship in 1891 and still with the firm in 1896, after which time, still in Kolkata, he set up on his own account with 2? 3? partners but I don't know their names or the name of their company.  Alice was widowed in Aug 1906 and their son was born in the UK in June 1908, so that narrowed down the time scale for the marriage.  Now I know where!

A little background (if sourced):

1847 to 1950

In 1847, William Mackinnon and Robert Mackenzie formed the Mackinnon Mackenzie Company (MMC), a general merchanting partnership based in Calcutta.[3] In 1856 Mackinnon formed the Calcutta and Burma Steam Navigation Company to carry post to the region:[3] the Company appointed MMC as their agents, secured contracts to transport British troops from Ceylon to India during the Indian Mutiny of 1857 and in 1862 floated on the London Stock Exchange under the name British India Steam Navigation Company.[3]

In 1874, James Lyle MacKay joined Mackinnon and Mackenzie in Calcutta and by 1914 was the sole surviving senior partner in MMC. Largely responsible for solving India’s currency problems and for the adoption of the Gold Standard, he was given a peerage by King George V for his services to industry in 1911.[3] He chose the title “Baron Inchcape of Strathnaver” to commemorate the Inchcape Rock, which lies off Arbroath, and Strathnaver in Scotland.[3]

From what you mention, Lachlan branched out on his own/with partners anytime from 1896?
