McCormick family, Great George's Street, Belfast
« on: Monday 04 May 15 20:19 BST (UK) »
Hi. I am wondering if anyone might be able to help me. I am seeking information on the McCormick family of Great George's Street, Belfast. The information I have is that James McCormick married Catherine ? and I know they had two daughters - Mary Ann who I think was born about 1860 and Bridget Sophia who was born about 1864. Apart from that I am stuck and am wondering if they had any other children. If anyone can help me with this or any information about them I would be very grateful.

There are several baptisms on RootsIreland that may be relevant, it is a subscription website.

This one also available on familysearch: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FPBQ-ZGQ ...

... and also via GRONI online, choosing the "full" option for £2 shows the original record digitised.

Have a look at this 1901 Ireland census return, the son in law and daughter are Samuel Henry who married Sophia McCormick (father James) in Belfast in 1900 (note some of the interesting entries under "where born"):

This presumably is Sophia:

Was James a soldier? Anyway, the following could be for a totally different James McCormick and Catherine, so simply to note for the moment, until you can rule out:

Martin 1863: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FG41-84C
Jane 1864: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FG57-J3K
Patrick James 1866: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FGH9-C2B
Catherine 1868: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FGHS-ZQ2

The father of Bridget Sophia McCormick born Bellary, India in 1867 was Private James McCormick of the 76th Regiment.

The Jane McCormick who died in Madras in 1865 (aged 1 year 5 months) was also a daughter of James McCormick of the 76th.

The other McCormick baptisms spotted by Gaffy were from a different family I think. That James was in an artillery unit.

FindMyPast has discharge papers for two James McCormicks of the 76th regiment. The most likely one was born Seagoe, Lurgan circa 1829. He intended to reside in Belfast on discharge in 1869. The other was born Colrey, Sligo around 1840 and intended to reside in Woolwich on discharge in 1878.

The 1900 Belfast Directory lists "M'Cormick J, labourer" at 142 Great George's Street so presumably he died sometime between mid-1899 and April 1901.

I think this is the burial for Eliza Jane McCormick I posted the familysearch link to at reply #1 (daughter of James McCormick and Catherine Waring):

https://ssl.belfastcity.gov.uk/burialsearch/BurialRecordDetails.aspx?RecordID=4436.3650

Note the address in the burial record: "138 Great Georges Street"

138 Great George's Street was the household of Robert Burns, Carpenter in the 1870 directory, and Annie Burns, sempstress in 1877 (when she was listed as the householder for both 136 and 138). I don't see James McCormick as a householder in Great George's Street before 1880 (but I suppose they could have been in lodgings there ).
