Hi Victoreen,

Welcome to Rootschat

There is a section on RootsChat where you can add your surnames of interest.  I did notice one had been listed with a similar spelling of Braffet (Northern Ireland) but you could add your own version of the spelling.

Scroll to the bottom of any RootsChat page and under "Your Tools" you will see the surname interests listed - click on that and follow the links.

Aaah - I see you have already added "Wadham"  "Jaggers" and "Monteith"

Regards
Sandra

Welcome to Rootschat.

Is there anything in particular you would like to know about Joseph?

Presumably you have seen his PCC will (1784) which mentions his daughter, as well as others.

A few Joseph Braffett snippets:

He was buried in the Presbyterian Old Meeting House in Poole on 24 Oct 1783 aged 82.

His will describes him as a stationer and ironmonger of Poole and he leaves several hundred pounds to:

Grandson: John Braffett
Granddaughter: Mary Braffett
Daughters: Mary Wadham, wife of Adams Wadham, cooper of Poole; and Elizabeth Bailey, wife of James Bailey, woollen draper of Poole

Immediately after receiving his inheritance, John Braffett put the attached advertisememnt into the local paper.

Joseph is mentioned in the will of Thomas Bird (1775) of Poole, as thomas is his landlord.

Joseph is also mentioned in several printed sources as a bookseller 9eg as the agaent for the 'Salisbury Journal' in 1755.

There may be a connection with Abraham Braffett, bookseller of Newport, Isle of Wight in the 1760s, especially as there is a reference in 1832 to (another?) Joseph Braffett, brother of the late Mr Edward Braffett, ironmonger of Newport, IoW. Abraham was living in Paternoster Row, London, when he was the beneficiary of his brother Jacob's will in 1759 (a mariner).

There are Braffetts in Poole, many of whom were trading with North America, throughout the 18th century.

Presumably you have seen Adams Wadham's Adminstration of 1814 which mentions his widow Mary, together with Joseph Wadham, silversmith and Benjamin Wadham, cooper.
