Carpeted shoemaker
« on: Wednesday 06 May 15 07:53 BST (UK) »
In the 1851 census the occupation of my William Carolan, born in Ireland in 1825, has been transcribed as "carpeted shoemaker", but I can't actually read the word, so don't know if it is correct.  Has anyone heard of the word "carpeted" and knows what it may mean?

Thanks.

My transcription reads 'Carpet shoemaker' but I don't have access to a copy of the original page.
If it is correct, perhaps he made Carpet Slippers.  :-\

Sounds like Stan is on the money and the 1861 Scotland Census transcription just says Shoemaker

And Heywood too

This an an advert from the Shetland Times - Saturday 17 November 1883, which seems to imply that carpet shoes were different to slippers, but what were "House Boots"?

Thanks for all your replies and comments.  The Scotlands People reference I have is: (Census 1851 685/01073/01015).

It does appear that carpet shoes are different to slippers, although in what way I don't know.  Perhaps someone else has a comment to make on this.

Is it possible that the shoes were made out of carpet?
