Kilbogie..... Is it a place?
« on: Wednesday 06 May 15 11:30 BST (UK) »
One of my early relatives named his house here in Australia "Kilbogie" and another was Kirkcaldy.
They came from around Uphall, Queensferry and maybe over the bridge into Fife....  I know of Kirkcaldy but where is Kilbogie? Or does it mean something else??? Thanks

Wonder if it's their interpretation of Culbokie which is on the Black Isle just north of Inverness

I think it's the old name for Kilbagie, near Kincardine (West Fife, so the right area)
Kilbogie Town is an old Scottish folk song.

As far as I can make out from various bits and pieces on Google, Culbokie on The Black Isle was once known as Kilbogie but from other references in the original post Kilbagie is probably a better candidate here.

EDIT
Incidentally the Kincardine volume of a nineteenth century publication "Present State of Husbandry in Scotland" has a list of errata including "for Kilbogie read Kilbagie". Could be one of those places where pronunciation and spelling have diverged.
/EDIT

The song contains no hint as to the location.
