Thomas Byrne and his descendants
« on: Wednesday 06 May 15 13:17 BST (UK) »
Thomas Byrne arrived in Greenock, Scotland from County Louth in Ireland in the very early 1900's.
He met and married a local girl, Jane Patterson, in April 1910.
I am a grand-nephew (his father and my grand-father were brothers) and I'm looking
for any information,however small. ???

I have reason to believe that they stayed in the Greenock area.
As of now I have had no joy in tracing any of their issue.
I'm working forward from Thomas & Jane's marriage in the hope of
finding present day relatives.

Hi ,

Scotlandspeople has a death for a Jane Byrne(other surname Paterson) 1934 Greenock Renfrew , born c1885.
If you have the marriage certificate it should give Jane Paterson's age.

Thank you so much,ev. I'v just seen the 1934 Death Cert. for Jane Byrne on Scotlandspeople and all the dates and names correspond with the information I already had in my possesion. My family member,
Thomas Byrne is listed as the Informant and her Widower.
What a breakthrough, thank you again.
I now know that Thomas was still alive in 1934, aged 64/65, and they were living at 63 or 65,Rue-End Street, West Greenock when Jane died. They had been married for 24 years. Did they have children? I expect so! The search continues.

Thank you again, ev. This is indeed, "my" Thomas Byrne. From the Death Cert. I have found his daughter, Mary, who was the informant. She signed  as Mary Byrne,so I presume she had not married. I have found her Birth Cert. on Scotlandspeople.gov.uk. and she was born in 1911, making her 30 years old when her father died. Am I right in thinking that at that time (the 1940's) a single woman of 30 would have been considered old as a prospective wife? I ask this as I'm not sure if I should now try following a Mary Byrne or a Mary X.   1941 and onwards is  within the 75 year prohibition rule for viewing Marriage Records on-line?

Update ://:  I've traced Mary to her death in Nov./Dec. 1990 at the age of 79 years. She had never married and did not have any children.  I'm now trying to determine if Thomas & Jane had any more children. The known family (Thomas, Jane and daughter Mary) remained all of their lives in West Grennock. The marriage in 1910, the Census of 1911, the birth of Mary in 1911 and all three deaths have them in the West Grennock area.
