I believe that the UK basic edition is only available as a download:

http://www.rootsmagic.co.uk/about/compare-uk-versions.php

It may be worth contacting them about using it on two computers, as I have never downloaded it (apart from the free version on a new laptop when I couldn`t find my disc after moving house).

You might want to check the "Terms & Conditions" but it is certainly possible to install the downloaded file on more than one computer by simply making a copy of it. However . . .

RootsMagic has a feature they call "RootsMagic-to-go", which installs a second copy of the program on a USB memory stick in addition to the main copy on the PC. You can plug this into any other Windows PC or laptop and work on your tree somewhere else, then, when you plug the USB stick back into the original machine it updates the main program with any new data you added.

Before this was available I used to have the program installed on both my PC and the laptop, but things could get confused unless you make sure both files are synchronised after every use.

Mike.

Silly me; I can buy the standard version from http://www.rootsmagic.co.uk/index.php

I would still like to try the family tree maker before deciding, but can't find a free trial for it.

Perhaps thy don't do this now but when I started with RM (version 5 if I recall) you could download a free one and buy a license later to enable some extra features. I remember using it for many months before actually buying - the missing features did not stop me at all, they were just extra charts and a limit to the number of generations you could fit on a page along with a few others if I recall.

I persuaded a son to buy me RM 6 some years ago and still use it now. They even do a version you can install on a thumb drive and access anywhere or send to relatives.

I am still using V5. I have no issue with it and it does what I ask

Having said that if I download the free basic V7 can I transport my work across from 5 to 7?

I cannot speak for 5 to 7 but 5 to 6 worked fine. Their tech-support would certainly be able to confirm.

When you select 'Import' from the 'File' menu on RM7 you get this list of options:
