Donougher/Bawden & Donougher/Power
« on: Friday 08 May 15 10:18 BST (UK) »
I am not sure of this.
I think there may be a link between these 2 combinations.

A very left field request, but can anyone bring the two together ?

Joseph Donougher married Alice Bawden in 1944. Both are deceased.
There is a birth in 1946 for a Donougher, Christian name starting with E, and mother a Power.

How do the 2 combinations interlock ?

Does it go back further ?
I belong to Joseph & Alice.

Trying everything.

Thanks
Alan

The most straight forward way would be to buy the marriage certificate for William Donougher which should give his father's name.

I suppose the link has to be made between:

RG12/2967 William Donougher and family 1891 Census, and
Chris Donohue, 13 Mann St in Bootle, Lancs, who had a son, Simon in the 1891 census. Simon was my grandfather. happy to accept the alternative spelling. Surname is not phonetic.

Sorry but this has been bugging me for years and I must admit to prior research, but no solution.

A copy of the GRO Marriage Index shows

Surname, First name(s); Spouse; District  Vol  Page
Marriages Sep 1944
DONOUGHER, Joseph; Bawden; Crosby  8b 1173

The local Registrar's Index has -

Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1944
Surname, Forename(s); Surname, Forename(s); Church / Register Office; Registers At; Reference
DONOUGHER, Joseph; BAWDEN, Alice; South Sefton Register Office or Registrar Attended; South Sefton CR/13/127

Taken together these two show that joseph DONOUGHER married Alice BAWDEN in July, August or September 1944, and it is likely that the marriage took place in the Register Office or a Catholic church - most Non-Conformist churches had an Authorised Person for marriages by this time.

The GRO Birth Indexes have the four entries in the period 1944 - 1947 with mother's Maiden Names, PENDER, BAWDEN, and POWER (2)

This suggests that there are three DONOUGHER families in the greater Liverpool area at this time.

Checking the GRO Marriage Index again shows three entries with the groom DONOUGHER for a fairly narrow year range.  The bride's names are BAWDEN (1944) spouse Joseph, POWER (1946) spouse William, and GREEN (1946) spouse Joseph

I was unable to find a death of an Alice DONOUGHER in the GRO Death indexes for 1944 - 1947

As has been suggested, the only source of more information will be the marriage certificates.

Hope this helps,

jim Lancaster (Bury, Lancs.)

Thanks Jim Lancaster.

I am the son of the 1944 Crosby (South Sefton) marriage. I am trying to find how the 2, but now you suggest 3, families are linked. Who in their past is the common denominator?

The GRO Indexes show the following events that might help you.

Looking for a Joseph DONOUGHER aged ca 20-30 in 1944 shows -

Surname  First name(s)  Mother  District  Vol  Page

Births Dec 1914
DONOUGHER  Joseph  Rogers  W. Derby  8b 855

Births Jun 1915
Donougher  Joseph  Mahoney  W. Derby  8b 439

Births Sep 1921
Donougher  Joseph  Butchard  W.Derby  8b 735

and similarly for a William DONOUGHER

Births Dec 1923
Donougher  William  Butchard  W.Derby  8b 1074

If you have your Joseph's age (the one who married Alice BAWDEN) then you might be able to decide which birth belongs to your Joseph.  The Joseph born in 1921 seems to have a brother William.  The marriage of their parents looks like -

Surname  First name(s)  Spouse  District  Vol  Page
Marriages Dec 1918
BUTCHARD  Catherine  Donougher  Liverpool  8b 132
DONOUGHER  Joseph  Butchard  Liverpool  8b 132

Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1918
Surname, Forename(s); Surname, Forename(s); Church / Register Office; Registers At, Reference
DONOUGHER Joseph BUTCHARD Catherine Liverpool, Register Office or Registrar Attended Liverpool REG_LP/317/180

Again possibly a marriage in a Catholic church.

The marriages of the other two Josephs from the GRO Indexes are -

Marriages Dec 1937
Donougher  Joseph  Pender  Liverpool N.  8b 996   Scan available - click to view
PENDER  Mary  Donougher  Liverpool N  8b 996

Marriages Jun 1946
Donougher  William  Power  Liverpool S.  8b 282
Power  Eileen T  Donougher  Liverpool S.  8b 282

As was suggested earlier, obtaining the marriage certificate should give his father's name and occupation and this should help identify his parents.

Hope this helps,

Jim Lancaster (Bury, Lancs.)

Hi Alan,

As the others have said we can’t answer this query you need to buy the marriage records to establish who their fathers were and do further research looking for them on census records and perhaps buying further certificates before you can establish if they are related to your family or not.

Is this 1861 family yours? I would think there’s a good chance that one or maybe the two of those other Donoughers might be descended from this family:-

1861

7 Esther Place, Lightbody Street, Liverpool

Eshen (Esther?) Donaker (Donougher?), Widow, 30, House Servant, Ireland
Simon Donaker (Donougher?), 18, Apprentice Cooper, Ireland
William Donaker (Donougher?), 12, Scholar, Ireland
Michael Donaker (Donougher?), 9, Scholar, Ireland
Christopher Donaker (Donougher?), 7, Scholar, Ireland

Also mention of a Simon Donougher here:-
