Black and Tans
« on: Saturday 09 May 15 06:41 BST (UK) »
I believe that a member of my family may have joined the Black and Tans after returning from the1st World War.  Would anyone know if these men ever returned to their homeland had they survived the troubles in Ireland, and if so, were their names changed. Any information about the Black and Tans would be very much appreciated

If you google 'Black & Tans' there is a lot of information online - my late father joined at the end of WW1 & survived.   I must admit they were a nasty lot but were only following orders & dad told me that he was nothing more than a paid assasin.

Good luck - it is possible to get the service records from Dublin Castle.

Cheers,
Anita.

I know a man that immigrated to New Zealand who told us about his time in the Black and Tans. He was exceeding fast and strong even when he got older and very fit. He certainly never changed his name, it was not a secret and would not back down easily from a fight.

Managed to see a video of the Black and Tans on Youtube, and it was quite an eye opener.
