Mystery of the Galleways and Conways of Gateshead
« on: Saturday 09 May 15 15:55 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I have a baffling mystery and would appreciate any help.  Guglielmo Galea (Galleway) married Maria Conway on the 9th of October 1920 in Gateshead.  They had three children, Sarah 1921, Elizabeth 1923 and Moira Teresa in 1928.  He went by Galleway for his marriage (anglicised his name I suspect) but I found his merchant navy sea record which tells me he's from Malta and his surname is actually Galea.  Is there any more information about this individual out there?

Moreover, I can not find Maria Conway and her parents.  I found her parents listed as Thomae Conway and Sarae Annea Warriner Conway on Maria's marriage.  I would love to find them in the 1911 and previous censuses but I haven't had any luck.

Thank you   :)

How old was Maria when she married and what was her father's occupation?

Thomas and Sarah Conway seem to appear together in 1891/1901/1911 but strangely never a Maria with them.  I am allowed to say that Sarah had 9 children - 5 were still living and 4 had died by 1911 but still no Maria

The names have clearly been 'Latinised' which is characteristic of a Roman Catholic marriage.
So it's possible her name was actually Mary rather than Maria  :-\
I can't find that 1920 marriage yet on the GRO Index  :-\
