I wonder if he was really a widow or living apart. I thought his wife died 1856 ST Austell 5c 95.
He died 1853 St Austell Workhouse.

If this is close to Richard's birth:

Richard Gummow  baptised 22 Oct 1823 at Saint Stephen IN Brannel,Cornwall, Father George Gummow, mother Ann, FHL  0252141, 0908025

then age is out in 1851.

Where did you get the information about the death of George in the workhouse, and how do you know it is the same George Gummow if you do not have him with his wife in 1841?

Added:
Do you mean you have a death for George Trethewy and are assuming he is George Gummow?

Is it not more likely he died before the 1841 census?

KGarrad suggested a baptism in 1798, is this not more likely for the marriage in 1822.

Sorry, I am confused.

Thought you meant George Gummow and George Trethewy are the same person.

Where did you get George Gummow's age from - especially as he is not with wife in 1841 (if she is his wife, and not unrelated).

There is no death registration of a George Gummow in Cornwall in 1853?

And, just to be pedantic, he would be a widower, not a widow! ;D

Nancy's burial (as per Cornwall-OPC-Database):
20th November 1856 at St Stephen in Brannel
Nancy Gummow, age 53, abode St Stephens

And the marriage:
5th August 1822, at St Stephen in Brannel
George Gummow to Ann Harry "With consent of parents"
(Groom's name recorded as Gummough)

Sorry, KGarrad

There is this death, which was where I started querying the Gummow/Trethewy connection:

Deaths December quarter  1853  George Trethewey     St Austell    5c   85

Sorry! You've lost me now?

Why are you looking for a George Gummow, and then a death for George Trethewy?! ???

Good morning all. Sorry for confusion.
I think I was "seduced" ;D by having found an item relating to George Trethewy   http://www.victoriacountyhistory.ac.uk/sites/default/files/page-attachments/st_stephen_book_1_may_2013.pdf

The mother of my connection Ann/Nancy Harry was a Trethewy.
I had read a Trethewy jounal which told of the deeds of George Trethewy , including selling his wife at market.
Trethewy was living with Ann/Nancy in 1841 and I was searching for the connection.
Ann Harry 1802-1856 =1822 George Gummow 1775-1828.
I found Ann , a son , and George Trethewy together in 1841.
In 1851 Trethewy was a lodger elsewhere. Ann was with a son and his family.

All now resolved thank you.

Some things to remember about the 1841 census:

No relationships are given. George may have been a boarder? But we shall never know!
Ages were (generally) rounded down to a multiple of 5 years.
No marital status is shown. Was Ann a widow?

Finally, wife-selling was an old custom used before the days of divorce!
