Birth Certificate Question
« on: Sunday 10 May 15 05:06 BST (UK) »
I have my grandmothers birth certificate and I have a question about it.

She was born 1918 in St Pancras, London.

Under Name, Surname of mother it says: Dorothy May Barnes of no occupation, 44 Mountain Street, Wellington.

Under Signature and residence of informant it says: D.M Barnes 19 Argyle Street, St Pancras.

Is it normal to have 2 different addresses?

Also how could I find out if nana was adopted by her biological father(she was illegitimate).

Hi

Birth certificates I have from that period only have 2 addresses, Col 1 which shows where born, and Col 7 which has the address of the Informant. The column for mothers name does not ask for address. The only thing I can think of is that she moved between the birth and registration and included her former address in addition to her name.

Hi

So Mountain Street, Wellington is a NZ address? There are several places named Wellington in the UK so I assumed it was one of those and it was not unusual for a single mother to give birth away from her usual residence. What was she doing in the UK?

Hi

English marriage certificates didn't show where born, they only had the address where she was living when she married. When and who did she marry?

Sorry make that her death certificate.

She married a NZ soldier-Robert Charles Milligan in 1919.

The story was that nanas biological father was killed in action when Dorothy May was pregnant with her and her mum married Mr Milligan when she was 9 months old.

Also how could I find out if nana was adopted by her biological father(she was illegitimate).

If her biological father was killed in action, then that couldn't have happened.

If you have her birth cert from the GRO and she had been officially adopted in England & Wales, there should be an annotation on the right hand side after the last column.

There was no formal adoption until 1927 when the 1936 Adoption Act came into force.
