John William Holden

Hello,

I was wondering if anybody could help me find any more information on a John William HOLDEN, who married Lavinia Ann OWEN (b1876, Penzance) in 1899 in Plymouth.

His children were Herbert Holden (b1902, Lincoln), Frank Holden(b1904, Lincoln) and Lavinia Mona HOLDEN (b1909, Lincoln).

A date of birth for John William HOLDEN would be really helpful. The only problem is I don't know where he was born. Most likely Cornwall (where his wife was born), Devon or Lincoln (where all his children were born) or possibly somewhere in between the three.

One helpful person from this forum suggested that he might have been in the Navy, hence the lack of records for him.

If anybody could find anything out about him, it would be thoroughly appreciated. Thanks!

I can see your problem as he isn't with the family in 1901 or 1911. However, in 1901 here is Lavinia:

James S Holden   30 brother      Penzance
Edwin Holden   19 brother      Penzance

As they are called Holden, unless it is a mistake on the census, they must be her brother in laws and so John's brothers, therefore making it likely that he was born in Penzance.

There are some online records for Plymouth marriages but I can't see anything for this couple. I think you may have to purchase the marriage certificate to establish John's fathers name.

Looks as well as if they are her brothers as well on the 1901 and have been transcribed in her name. There is no Edwin Holden born in Penzance in 1881/1882 but there is an Edwin Owen

I posted this in the chat, but thought I would post here so others can see what I found and if that can help them find more or what they think.

I started on the 1901 census entry we found for Lavinia and her brothers and looked at her eldest son. He is listed John C, but looking at the image it looked more like John O. I looked at the birth records and there is a John Owen Holden b- dec qtr 1899 Plymouth 5b 252. If you look on the 1911 census you will find John Owen Holden with his aunt and uncle. 1911 census look ups aren't allowed but you should be able to find it.

That leads to the 1901 entry of a John and Clara Aukland. She is listed as 29 born in St Peter at Arches, Lincolnshire, England. (Piece 4475 Folio 27 Page 3) This then leads to a marriage entry of a 23 year old Clara Holden aged 23 marrying in 1895 St Martin, Lincoln to a John Auckland. Father is listed as a John William.

Armed with fathers name, age and birthplace it leads to this 1881 census entry: (Piece 3244 Folio:98 Page:37)
John Wm. Holden 32, wife Eliza 32 and children Clara 8, JOHN WM 5, Liley 3 & Herbert H.
