A curious omission
« on: Monday 11 May 15 17:24 BST (UK) »
Hello gang, me again ;D

The Muthill PR entry for James Soutar in 1796 says "Bapt at Crieff James son of Andrew Sutor..."

The IGI entry says birth date is 10 June and baptism date is 3 July.

But there is no entry for James in the Crieff PR. I had a page view and there are only 3 entries on 3 July and none of them anywhere close to James Sutor or any variation. I got to the page view by searching for another name from a very close date.

The parents Andrew Sutor and Annie McCulloch had 4 other children and none of them are recorded at Crieff. Any ideas?

Cheers,
China

It is not unusual to find a child baptised in a nearby parish. When this happens, it is usually recorded in the parents' home parish, not in the parish where the baptism took place. Baptism like this can happen, for example, when there is a vacancy in the parents' own parish and they have no minister at the time. It could be that their own minister is away from the parish at the time (at the General Assembly, for example).

Okay, got it. Thanks, GR, this has saved me some head-scratching.

Shame, because Crieff notes the father's profession and Muthill doesn't. I'm 95% sure that this is the right guy, but I'm looking for the son of a shoemaker to make sure. Still no guarantees, I know, but I remain hopeful :D
