You don't buy the cert - you download it from Scotlands People.  You would need to buy credits & look in the 2 possible districts between 1871-1881 for any suitable candidate.  You would then have to download and check the info re: wife to establish the right one.

I've just done a quick search on the index and I think there is only one match

I searched Thomas Ross death between 1871-1881 birthyear 1815 plus/minus 2yrs

Select Dumfries from County list and then Dumfries again from District list.  There was no match for Annan

Thanks CaroleW, that date narrows it down a lot! It fits in nicely with the census data, too.
