Where is Argry?
« on: Tuesday 12 May 15 09:16 BST (UK) »
I am trying to pinpoint the location of the townland Argry, mentioned in records of relatives that had lived in the parish of Clonleigh. 'A Directory to the Market Towns: Villages, Gentlemen's Seats, and Other Noted Places' by Ambrose Leet lists this place but I cannot find many references to it or find it on any maps. It is supposedly quite close to Lifford. Could anyone help, please?

Regards

There is a townland in Clonleigh parish by the name of Aghawee?
Maybe that's the place you are looking for?

Thanks for your help, KGarrad. I have wondered that too although I can't find anything to confirm it.

Have you seen this?
...Argry is just over the county border from Donemana - perhaps 10 or 15 miles distant, in Co Donegal. I have various records suggesting that the McCreas around Argry, which is very close to Lifford, are connected to the Donagheady branches. ...

Googling 'argry', donegal brings up lots of other references
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

In the will of a John Sinclair of county Tyrone, Argry is described as a quarterland in the parish of Lifford:

Thank you both for your help. Next to Liskey, where the family are shown living in 1901, there is an Argery Hill. This must be where the records are referring to.
