Thomas Goodin - I have been rather sidetracked
« on: Tuesday 12 May 15 11:03 BST (UK) »
I rent a large field in Glen Parva/Aylestone and during some clearing work have found an intact old mineral water bottle complete with marble. It has inspired me to find out a little about the manufacturer.
The bottle belongs to Thomas Goodin of Greater Wigston. Thomas appears to have been born about 1850 to John Goodin and Martha Phipps possibly in Leicester or Bromsgrove. He married Hentrietta Humberstone of Wigston Magna in 1880 and they produced Sodawater or Mineral water from their property in Mowsley End, Wigston Magna.
I've tracked the business in 1881 to 1911 and also foundit mentioned in Kelly's directories of 1912, when Thomas was running it. By 1925 Thomas had died (1917) and the business was being run by Mrs T Goodin (Henrietta). This continued to 1928 at least.
To write up a bit of a family history about this manufacturer though I need to find Thomas in 1851/61/71 and also find when Henrietta died and what happened to the business.
Just wondered if anyone can help. Thanks in advance.  :)

Might this be the family in 1851

John Goodin 35
Martha 53
Thomas 3

All born Bromsgrove

Birth year of 1848 fits with the death you mention for Thomas in 1917
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

In 1881 there is a Goodin family in Mosely End - may well be Thomas's famly but looking at the place of birth of the younger children mentioned, it would explain why they are nowhere to be seen in other censuses!

24 Mosely End, Wigston Magna

John Goodin  age 56  farmer and grazier b Tilton, Leic  (other censuses say Twyford)
Martha Goodin age 55, b Wigston
Betsy K (or H?) Goodin, age 17, b Cape Town
Alfred age 15 b Cape Town.

Thomas and Henrietta are next door.

I think you need to look at emigration records ---

Thanks for the replies.
Annie65115, that is perfect. I haven't read it yet but I had just discovered that the family had emigrated to South Africa along with Martha's sister and her husband before returning.
The bottle I found is in excellent condition and it just sparked my interest. I will now be able to write up a fairly comprehensive history of Thomas Goodin and his wife Henrietta who seems to have carried on the business after Thomas's death.
Thanks again to everyone who passed on information. :D
