Magrino's
« on: Tuesday 12 May 15 22:51 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Looking for Magrino information. Here is what we know.

Maria Polino born in Brighton 1879, had 2 children with Pietro Magrino.
They never married because Pietro neglected to mention he had a wife and child back in Italy. We don't know their names.

They had a son Antonio born in Brighton in 1898, we have his birth cert. says 12 Cavendish St. Brighton. He was taken when he was about 8 or 9 and sent to Canada, we feel he might have been part of the Child Migrant schemes, but can find no records of his travel to Canada, or Canadian records.  If you could find anything that would be great.

Maria & Pietro had a daughter Asunta born on 20 March 1900 in Brighton
Asunta was adopted in 1901 by Herbert Kiddle.

Asunta doesn't appear on the 1901 census for the Polino's who moved to the Isle of Wight after the death of Giovanno Polino, but Antonio does but he is listed under Polino not Magrino.
Asunta does not appear on her adoptive parents census either.  We were wondering where she was during that time period.
I was wondering if perhaps she was put up for adoption at birth and perhaps was in a children's home, but I couldn't find anything on that.  We couldn't find adoption papers, but they may not be available.

Anything you can find for those missing time slots would be appreciated.
Thank you

I would refer you to the Surrey Board where the moderator, Valda, has posted the very useful
GUIDE TO CENSUSES AND CIVIL REGISTRATION.

There are any number of reasons why a person isn't showing up in a census, not the least of which is deliberate misinformation!

The 2 yr old Antonio in Isle of Wight in 1901, is actually listed as a son of Antonio.  If he is actually a son of Maria ... then who is the parent of Benedict?

1901
Wells Court, South Street, Newport
Antonio Polino 48 widower bn Italy
Maria 21 dtr bn Brighton
Filomena 17 dtr bn Brighton
Frank 12 son bn Brighton
Theresa 9 dtr bn Brighton
Joseph 4 son bn Brighton
Antonio 2 son bn Brighton
Benedict 1 son bn Brighton
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Benedict's father Giovanno died 23 April 1900,
Benedict was born Jan. 1900.

my grandmother Rose, was married May 1900 and came to America Dec. 1900

His mother Antonia (mispelled as Antonio) is the widow listed, she moved the family to the Isle of Wight after that.

Yes it is, Thank you, we have that.
What we are missing is the from when he was about 8 or 9 and taken from the Isle of Wight, to Canada, Probably around 1905. (His mother actually married in 1905 and we found census info, but he is not listed on that, so he must have been gone by then).
Records were also checked on the Isle of Wight for the workhouse, in case he was there, but no luck).  I was unable to locate any travel records, (that is why I thought perhaps he was one of the boys in the child migrant scheme), I checked some of the websites, but nothing came up for him.  We know he said he was placed with the Hurrell Family in Hull, Ontario Canada, and we found some records on Courtenay Hurrell, who was the son in the family,(I have printed the records I found, he was in his 20's so most likely on his own then). but nothing for his parents or his 2 sisters Muriel & Jean Hurrell.  And no census or records for Tony during that time period. From what I found it looks like the Hurrell went to Canada in 1900.

Thanks again for all your help.
