John Ross and John Richardson, Greenwich chimney sweeps
« on: Thursday 14 May 15 01:12 BST (UK) »
Hello

I was hoping someone could do me a small favour and look these two chimney sweeps up on the 1841 and possibly 1851 census reports.

I have these guys in some evidence to a Government committee in 1834 and I'm hoping they lived until at least 1841.

The first is John Ross, who was living in Queen Street, Greenwich in 1834. He said he was 34 so was probably born around 1800.

The other is John Richardson, he was living in Church Street, Greenwich but I'm not sure at what time this was and it is entirely possible that he was not living there in 1841. He was much older, but was definitely still alive in 1834.

I am interested in any information about them - particularly any reference to where Richardson was born. My GGGG grandfather Thomas Tyler b. 1800, d. 1835, was bound to Richardson as a climbing boy as a small child, but I have no idea of any of his history prior to that so at this point cannot take the family history any further back than him. Ross was Thomas's friend and fellow apprentice.

Any help you can give me would be much appreciated.

Fran

Hi Jennifer

Thank you sooo much for looking this up for me, I have really been struggling to find either of them! I am hoping, and this is a very long shot, that perhaps my GGGG Grandfather may have come from the same town as one of them. I have really just run out of options. Thomas Tyler is such a common name and given that he died in 1835 before census records of any help began, and that chimney sweeps were such an under the radar lot, I was not holding out much hope that I could go any further. Thanks again!!
I will start scouring the Stoke Newington Middlesex records to see if there are any Tyler families that look likely.
I feel one day I will get to the bottom of this, even if I have to travel half way around the world to go to the London archives!!
Thanks again :-)

Fran

Hello Fran

I don't want to burst your bubble but it looks like he took anybody he could get. It is a shame the two on the 1851 have got such common names, I tried to find them later census but did not have any luck. With these names Robert Ferguson and also John Ross could be from Scotland. The enumerator could have even got the Stoke Newington wrong although he did put Middx, as it could have been just Newington which would have fitted in with where he was living as one is south of the Thames the other is North?
I will keep looking.

Hi non scientific but putting in Tyler occ *Sweep in 1851 census, gives a family in Maistone born in Greenwich eg Ann Tyler 52 Widow occ Chimney Sweep b Greenwich and family, their is also a Thomas 28 married to a Mary also born Greenwich,  so it may be from that area of England that any records of birth etc may be obtained?

PS see you have a much earlier thread re the Tyler family?
