Where Am I? No. 21 - St Andrews Church - destroyed during WW2
« on: Thursday 14 May 15 07:32 BST (UK) »
Hi All

Don't know if you are ready for another challenge yet, but here goes.

Written on the back of this photo is "St Andrew's as it was before it was burnt down sometime during the war from 1939 - 1945".

Question is, St Andrew's where?  :)

Possibility:

St Andrew's Church Bellshill, Lanarkshire "destroyed by fire during the war years"

although haven't found any pictures to compare just a snippet from the newspaper.

Fire was in January 1941 - church was built in 1846 to replace a smaller building.

Hi Pinetree

Thanks for looking!  :) :)  I can't find a photo either (nothing new there  ::) ), but while looking I saw  St Andrew's Cathedral which looks a bit like the one in my pic, although I think there are differences.

No cross that one off the list, too many differences now I see them together.

I'm afraid the Cathedral at St Andrews has been a (very beautiful) ruin for centuries.

The pictured church is built of brick - not something often seen for churches north of the border.  I'd be inclined to look further south.  The architecture does look Victorian.

The church which burnt down was St Andrews United Free Church...There is a history on it but no old photos of what it looked like.

Thanks for that Nell.  It does look like a beautiful spot to visit, but from the looks of things, every square inch of Scotland is stunning!

Will look south as you suggest.

If it is this St Andrew's then it has been rebuilt and remodelled.  Looking on their Facebook page, they celebrated the church's 250 anniversary in 2012.  Makes me doubt it is the right St Andrew's.
