Joseph Delves of Tunbridge Wells
« on: Thursday 14 May 15 14:25 BST (UK) »
Hello; I am interested in finding out any information about the circumstances under which Joseph Delves DIED AT SEA, according to probate records, on February 14,1867. His death was registered at Liverpool.

He was born December 11,1824 in Tunbridge Wells. He was one of several children born to Tunbridge Wells parents Joseph Delves (1796-1857) and Mary Jane Delves, nee Smith (1807-1872).

Joseph Delves was a surgeon. In the 1851 census he was a surgeon living in Tunbridge Wells and in the 1850's was the house surgeon at the Tunbridge Wells Dispensary and Infirmary.

The 1861 census has him at 15 Grove End Road in St Marylebone,Middlesex as a visitor to his married sister Susannan and her husband Frances Charles Alfred Clifford. This is the last record I can find for him.

He may have become a ships surgeon, either on a packet ship or perhaps the Royal Navy (I have no idea). I can find no marriage record for him and so it appears he was single at the time of his death. The executor of his estate was his brother in law Frances Charles Alfred Clifford that he was living with at the time of the 1861 census. No mention of a widow in the probate record.

Any help would be appreciated.

The death was in 1862.   The 1861 census states he was unmarried.

Thank you for the excellent information. Yes I made a typo error -he died Feb. 14,1862 not 1867. does The Times give any more details-if yes please provide it.

That's Great!.......Thank you very much. I have sent an email off to the Marine Museum in Greenwich to see what records they have. With the name of his father I was able to research both Marlborough House and his parents and siblings, so I have all the family info.

I will now look online for details about the ship he died on and the Peninsular & Oriental Line and see what turns up.

Thanks everyone for your help. If you find anything else let me know.

To Rosie99

Was "Manilla" a typo error. Should it be Manila and if so is that Manila Spain?
