HAIR BRUSH FACTORY near Wood Green, London ??
« on: Friday 15 May 15 18:12 BST (UK) »
My mother in law was an artist in the 1930's at a hair brush factory. She would draw images that were then protected by a coating on the back of hair brushes.
We know it was near Wood Green (she lived in Muswell Hill) but I can't seem to find a mention of the place anywhere.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Joobles

Joobies,

The Kellys directory for Essex 1914 list several brush manufacturers, see attached image. There is a 1929 Kellys but not available to view free on line but available to buy if you what a sanpshote nearer to 1930.

Thanks for looking Peter.

So if they are the ones in Essex (sadly not quite the right area) I really need to find a list like that closer to the Wood Green area - if there is one.

Kind regards.

Joobies,
Sorry for my first attempt I originally thought Wood Green was in Essex not Middlesex. Attached are the three brush makers listed in Kellys Directory for Wood Green and area of 1912/13.
Hope this is better info.

Many thanks for looking Peter and Chris.

So we have three in exactly the right area as at 1912/13 but none in 1939.

Are there any yellow pages for the early 1940's Chris ?

I wish mum in law was still with us so I could ask her.

Sorry, 1939 is the only one I have, thanks to my late parents never throwing anything away (post-WW2 the Post Office used to take back the old directories for recycling when they gave you a new one, but ISTR they refused this one).

You could follow through the 1912/13 companies in the 'phone books on Ancestry to see where they went (just put the first word of the company name as "surname"). Or maybe someone could look in the big fat London-wide Kelly's directories – most Local Studies Libraries in "inner" London (i.e. pre the 1965 expansion) will have a wall full of them.

Joobles,

Parish  Chest is selling the following:

Wood Green, Southgate, Palmer's Green Directory 1931 (Kelly's)
Ref: JIG-173
Supplied by JiGraH Resources.

As with many of these directories, the map is missing. The area covered is roughly from Shaw Wood, Church Wood & East Barnet Road on the north to Alexandra Palace & Park on the south and from the London County Mental Hospital on the west to Bush Hill & Firs Lane on the east.
Other than the map, the directory is complete and comprises:
Wood Green topography;
Public officers & offices;
Parochial information;
Churches, chapel, institutions &c;
Street directory;
Private residents (alphabetical list of);
Tradesmen and others (alphabetical list of);
Professional and trades directory.

Includes Winchmore Hill and Bowes Park.

Some of the scanned pages appear not to be straight. This is a feature of the original book rather than the scanning process.
£10.00

JiGraH Resources, the company that produces this also seems to be selling a 1934 version of the same directory as well.
