family bible mystery - help please!!!!
« on: Friday 08 July 05 08:39 BST (UK) »
Please can anyone help me with a mystery - a family bible was passed down to me by my grandfather Reginald Stray who died in 1999 - he told me it had been in his family for many generations. in the front cover are the names of peter and Harriot Allen and their children
William 1/11/1792
Harriot 26/9/1794 - 16/3/1800
Peter 14/11/1796
Ann 21/10/1798 - 30/10/1798
Charles 4/5/1800
Henry 20/7/1802
Mary Ann 19/3/1805
Frederick 15/6/1807

and at the back the names of George and Jane barton and their children
George Robert 23/9/1822
Jane 9/11/1824
Mary Ann 13/12/1826
Charles 22/4/1828
Elizabeth Agnew 2/6/1830
Fanny Rebecca 6/8/1832

and a newspaper cutting relating to the death of George the 4th in 1830

the mystery is how this is connected to my family as I can find no Bartons or Allens despite researching back all lines on my grandfather's side - I have so far found - CROXSON, STRAY, NEWMAN, COLE, NEWMAN, BRIDGER, TAYLOR, HARPER, WARD, HEWITT, AUSTIN, ALBERY and  SUTTON  but cannot see how this links

I did find on an old american forum a question about the marriage of a Thomas Croxson to a Mary Ann barton but have been unable to find evidence of this

I have traced some of the Bartons through 1871 and 1881 censuses and some marriages for the men but still no link

any help or suggestions gratefully received

Hi Nikki

What area are we talking about for Thomas CROXSON?

Do you have early censuses for the families?  If the Mary Ann BARTON that married (or didn't!?) Thomas CROXSON is the one mentioned in the Bible, it strikes me that this would have taken place aroung 1850-60, so they would be married on the 1861 census.

There isn't a match on freebmd, but 1837online may be able to help you.

Mary Ann is not an uncommon first name, but I did find a Thomas CROCKSON in Shopshire 1861, married to a Mary Ann.  Thomas's sister Eliza and their daughter also MA is in the same household.  MA's age is 2 years out.  Thomas was born Wolverhampton.  Probably a complete red herring!!

Just in case, the ref is RG9/1849 27 14

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Hi Nikki,

Are the Allens the ones from Chichester, Sussex?
I found in the IGI records for the christenings of William and Harriet there.

There is also a user-submitted entry (so we don't know the accuracy) of a marriage of a :
Peter Allen b. 1767 Chichester to a Harriet Grover in 1790 in Lewes Sussex

Do you know what the connection is between the Allens and the Bartons? It doesn't seem immediately obvious from the names that you listed. Not that it will help with finding the connection to your Croxson's necessarily, but you never know.

Best regards,

Emily

I'm afraid I can't find any links yet  but have some possible marriages of Bartons (who seem to be from Portsmouth according to IGI extracted records:

A Fanny Rebecca Barton married Willian Charles Johnson 1852 in Alverstone (IGI) +  Alverstoke    2b   689 sep 1852 (freeBMD)

Elizabeth Agnew Barton married Hiram Edwin Mildred 1859 St. Thomas Portsmouth,  (Portsea I.    2b   650 sep 1859)
(They are at rg9 643 in 1861 and RG 11/1145 f46 in 1881. In 1881 there is a 9 year old Augusta Hogsflesh visiting)

There is also in the IGI a marriage of a George Barton to a Jane Colenutt in 1821 Portsea which could be the George and Jane from the bible?

Don't know if any of these additional names might help you find a link....
