Daily Mail, Feb 15 1950
Plans have been abandoned, after opposition, to make Wilmar Lodge, Ewell, Surrey, a Territorial centre.

Had you seen?

It was advertised for sale in the Daily Mail, April 1912, then a family home -
"... 12 bed and 3 recep. rooms, stabling, delightful grounds and paddocks, 6 1/2 acres ..."

and the Sunday Times, Nov 1969 after its conversion/stint as a nursing home etc -
"... Late Victorian mansion ... 1 1/3 acres ... 21 principal rooms, 4 bathrooms, 4 w.cs., cloakroom, domestic quarters. Stable/garage block. Oil fired central heating".

Agree the apparent paucity of info.

Per that Epsom and Ewell History Explorer page,   "Hessle House later became the Wilmar Lodge Nursing Home and is now The Elders Care Home."

There's a photo here:

I am just looking at references in The Times.

The house Wilmar Lodge, Epsom Road, Ewell, was offered for sale in 1926 for £6,500 ( there is a photo - March 4, page 25)

There are many birth announcements for children born at Wilmar Lodge Nursing Home, Ewell starting in 1934 and ending in 1948

In 1949  there's the public enquiry into its potential use by the TA.

By 1950 it is in use as a nursing home again. Mentioned in many birth announcements up to 1957.

So it seems to have been an upmarket private nursing home for most of the period 1934-1957.

I'd come to the conclusion that a "... home for unmarried mothers ..." it was not, having seen the Times announcements!

Hey, thanks for all this, will have a proper look at it all tonight as at work right now.
Is it likely that my grandmother (or her parents most likely) would have paid to have my mother there? She was born illegitimately there in 1943.
