I emailed Bob from your link about the family history and it sounds like William's children listed both Doane, Ireland and the Isle of Wight as his birth places. Somehow it looks like they both ended up listed. It does not seem like Doane, Ireland is a real place? I haven't found any certificates of birth, marriage or death, or immigration for that matter. Was it common for people to lie in that age? I had no idea that they would keep their birth place such a secret.

Maybe he did not know where he was born and just said the first thing that came into his head.  His parents could have moved around when he was small, anything is possible.  I don't suppose people told lies any less in those days than they do now. It would not surprise me if he had made up his name either.  ???

Hi,

I found this marriage which could be connected if William was born on the Isle of Wight,

Pallot's Marriage Index, 1780 - 1837

Wm TAYLOR
Mary INGRAM
13 Oct 1785
Carisbrooke
I of W

The Island dialect can be misleading, not everything sounded/sounds as it is written, some place names,

Shorwell  said like  Shorrell

Niton  said like  Nitten

but I can't think of anywhere that could be Doane :-\

Further examples of the accent,

It might be worth contacting the Isle of Wight Record Office to see if they will do a look up in their card index for William's baptism,

I think that is a very good marriage Daisy  ;D

Perhaps the Carisbrooke area would tie in with the Queen Victoria connection that has been mentioned. I suppose they could also have worked at the castle.   :-\

Thank you so much Daisy! I emailed the records office to see if they could find me any further information. Now if only I could figure out what Doane was about!

Hi,

Hopefully the Record Office will be able to find him :)

Is there anywhere to see the original image that the transcription is taken from?  I've just done a quick search at Ancestry for keyword Doane and found all sorts of mistranscriptions for names, from DAVIES to DOWNEY ??? so I wonder if it says something else entirely?

The record office wrote me back:

There is no entry for William Ingram Taylor in 1789 but there is an entry for William Taylor in the parish of Newchurch the son of William and Mary Taylor.  The baptism took place on 19 October 1788.  The family are described as paupers.

I asked about the marriage record as well but I haven't heard back. I. Glad this matched up though so hopefully I'm on the right track now. Plus if his family was poor maybe it would explain the rumor that he set sail at a young age.

Still trying to track down source documents. I contacted the cemetery and they are doing a seach of their records for me and I'm hoping to track down a death certificate if I can. Thanks for pointing out that Doane could have been misspelled from something else!

There's a Downend about 4 miles from Newchurch, I wonder if that was abbreviated locally to Down which became Doane?
