It is about half and half! Some give mothers maiden name, most do not? They are just James and Sarah Ingram etc....?

Puplett, Sonnex, Lott, Dunkiss, Hart - London area.
Hudson, Jenner, Dedman - Sussex

I found where Doane came from. It's listed in the Eariy Oregonion Index as his place of birth but I have no idea how accurate that is. I don't have anything on siblings. How would I see that birth record?

The birth can be found on Ancestry recorded as William Ingram. I'm not convinced it is the right one, as there are a lot of William Ingrams in that area and it is over 60 miles away from the Isle of Wight where he claims to have been born.

How clearly is Doane written, is it a transcription?  There is an Isle of Wight County in Virginia, USA, could he have been born there rather than Isle of Wight, Hampshire?

That's an interesting find, Rosie- the second explanation sounds plausible.

I had considered the Isle of Wight in VA but there are multiple records for him that list his birthplace as England.

Thank you for that message post! It is a very interesting story if any of it is true. Any reason to lie about being Irish in those days?

The problem is how much of any of the information given by anyone about him is true.  If he made up his place of birth he may also have made up his combination of names.  Family stories even recent ones are often found to be fiction.

What information is given on his marriage certificate.
