Rowing Clubs on the Thames near Maidenhead c1890
« on: Saturday 16 May 15 22:59 BST (UK) »
St B G H appears th be the body which awarded a silver tankard to my great grandfather who came 2nd in a 1/4 mile race on 22 February 1890. He lived in Bray Maidenhead. Any ideas what St B G H might stand for? St Bartholomew? and if so, what nest for G HI can't find any Berkshire newspapers on newspaper collection in Findmypast to check in one.

'St Barts and Guys Hospital' would fit (but I do not think it exists), but so would a whole variety of others....

Thanks for your links. I've looked at both and shall contact them, but history and archives do not figure large in their websites! I imagine that the St B G H would be a pretty small club. My gt grandfather was 42 by 1890. He had won awards for rowing in 1870 at Hackney Wick, but was away from his family in 1890, and possibly took it up again to fill his time till they could be reunited. Perhaps a local church club.

The Brigade of Guards Rowing Club was based at Maidenhead. There's a B and G there to play with?

Yes, but a bit out of the Cox class, I think! They usually joined the Royal Berks Volunteers or the TA after 1908.

Are you aware of Rootschatter Lesanne who is researching the Cox family in Maidenhead? You may have common ground.

No, I'm not, nor do I know how to find her/ him. But I need to. How or what do I search?

So, I used my noddle and found the thread. Unfortunately, this Cox family is not mine. Mine were incomers, arriving there c1890 and leaving approx 1904. They had no family to go to there and left only one behind when they left. He had no children. My gt grandfather went there because he got a job there. Left when he lost it.
