The Mysterious John Ford Allerton!
« on: Sunday 17 May 15 15:25 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

In looking at my Insley family of the Hartshorne & Woodville area of South Derbyshire, I have hit a bit of a mystery!

My 4x gt aunt Sarah Insley b1814 in Hartshorne married John Ford Allerton on 24th Dec 1838 at St Peter's Church, Hartshorne. John Ford Allerton is described as aged 25 & a Potter by trade.

In 1841 I cannot find John Ford Allerton or Sarah.

In 1851 Sarah (Alerton) is age 34 & lodging with her parents Joseph & Ann Insley in Woodville, Derbyshire. With her is a 12 year old daughter Frances born in Hartshorne. There is however no sigh of John Ford Allerton.

In 1861 Sarah (Alleton) age 46 is still living with her parents Joseph & Ann Insley, this time in Blackfordby, Leicestershire. There is no sign of either Frances or John Ford Allerton.

The 1838 marriage record is currently the only record I have of John Ford Allerton. After that nothing. Where is he on the above censuses & what happened to him?

Many thanks in advance.

Kind regards

David

Hi

Looks like the family in 1841 are going by the surname FORD, and are in Hartshorne

John FORD 25 earthenware man, not bn in county
Sarah        20                            born in county
Frances      2                                "    "     "

in the household of a Joseph Hermes ?

Hi Claire,

Many thanks for that, much appreciated.

Dropping the Allerton part of the surname, would of course explain the difficulty in finding them! ::) ;D

Thanks again.

Kind regards

Hi

Have just been checking some marriage records in Hartshorne and there is one of a Caroline FORD, father John FORD , potter in 1844. She married a William MEE. Thinking this could be John F Allertons sister, I checked where she was born from the  1851 census, she was born in Staffordshire, and in the census has a 28 year old Sarah ALLERTON visiting, so there is a connection somehow.

He names his Father as John Ford Allerton, Occp Potter, on 1838 Marriage (FreeREG)

John ALLERTON, Buried 20 Feb 1842, St Peter's Church, Hartshorne, Derbyshire
Age 53 (Birth c 1789)
(Familysearch.Org)

1841 Census in Hartshorn has a John Allerton born c 1791, NOT in County, Occp Potter,
With him is a Caroline**** age 20 also not born in County

Hi Claire,

Many thanks for that. Much appreciated.

Regarding the 1851 census, Sarah Allerton would have been 37/38 not 28, I know that from the 1841 & 61 censuses she had been knocking 2/3 years off her age, but 9 or 10 years! :o Alternatively, was it a typo? ;D

Thanks again for your help.

Kind regards

David

Hi

This Sarah ALLERTON was 28 born Staffs, just a relation maybe. When Caroline FORD married William MEE one of the witnesses was a Sarah FORD ~ this was probably your Gt Aunt.

Hi Trish,

Many thanks for that, much appreciated.

Wonder what the changing/dropping of names is all about with that family! Seem to be either Ford, Ford Allerton or Allerton! What's that all about! Certainly making life more difficult/interesting if nothing else! ;D

Kind regards
