it  doesn't help that  the  entries  with  William and Lucy  as  parents ,   have William as a Gardener  and the same occupation is for the William/Louisa entries !

Hmm........... wonder  if  getting this death  cert  may   help  ,  ie  with   who  registered  it   or details of any spouse

Deaths Sep 1860

Ray  Lucy     Croydon  2a 89

Doesn't appear  to  be a William Ray/Eliza  marriage    in Croydon area ,   nearest  one I see is Sevenoaks  in 1849 to Eliza Oliver

Thanks Jan57,

I come down through George s/o William and Eliza.  He was born ~1829 so I think we are looking for a pre-civil reg marriage.

I sent for a death cert - don't think it gets me further forward!

William Ray died 16/2/1864 Lansdowne Road, Croydon.  Occ Gardener; age 74 ; informant William Ray of same address.

I can't fully read William Ray Snr address in 1861 census, but looks like Lans_____ No.4.
2 other William Ray in 1861
- William L Ray b 1809 Plumber; wife Sophia probably pre civil reg marriage
- William Ray b 1817 Railway labourer; wife Jane

Lansdowne Place No 4  :)

Other census show William L Ray as William H. Ray  This marriage could be worth considering

Ancestry has indexed images of Surrey baps 1813-1913. So putting in William Ray and Louisa as parents brings up (all father occ is gardener and abode Croydon or Croydon common)

Eliza bap 15/8/1813 Croydon St. John - incorrect as wife in 1851? but age would be wrong too

William Henry bap 18/6/1815 Croydon St. John

Richard bap 29/12/1822 Croydon St. John

Susannah bap 9/10/1825 Croydon St. John - age 15 in 1841 census

Robert bap 20/4/1828 Croydon St. John - age 10 in 1841 census

George bap  4/7/1830 Croydon Common St. James - believe recorded name as Richard in 1841 census age 10

John age 5 in 1841 census no trace in baps.

So now convincing myself I have it solved :)
