Passenger Alice Whitaker Pullan to New Zealand
« on: Monday 18 May 15 18:12 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me find a name on a passenger list? I have all the census details for Alice Whitaker Pullan born 1845 up to and including 1871. I have since found out using other searches that she married in New Zealand in 1881 to James Torries. I cannot find her on passenger lists - please can you help?

If she did arrive on this particular 'Surat' trip to NZ it ended in being rescued from a ship wreck 'she left Gravesend on September 28, 1873'

Some of the passengers recieved free clothing and were take to hospital

In the papers a letter of complaint that the passengers were waiting for their luggage and were struggling to live

Aha - I found the Passenger list she is NOT on it as A W Pullan
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ourstuff/Surat1874.htm

There is an  Alice W.    22years single woman travelling with a Woodcock family.

Alice Whittaker Pullan would have been 28 that year?

I think you may have found her - Alice Whitaker Pullan lived with relatives during her time in England, and one of the families she lived with was named Woodcock! They noted her in the census as 'adopted member' . Amazing amount of info form you all - thank you - I can see I have lots of confirmations to do which is wonderful.

Hi

Found this Alice W. WOODCOCK earlier (ex "Surat" - 1873-74) and whilst she was listed under "single women", it appears she was with family of Thomas (42) and Hannah (43) WOODCOCK and a Joseph WOODCOCK (13 years - listed under "single men").   [Young adults were transferred to "single men's and single women's" quarters for the voyage even if they were travelling with parents / relatives.]

Hi Bevances

The young man Joseph WOODCOCK (per "Surat" 1873-4) sadly died in a railway accident at Dunedin (NZ) in late 1881 aged just 22 years. :(

His burial record at Dunedin gives his full name as "Joseph Whitaker WOODCOCK" - and he is interred with his father Thomas Henry, who died in June 1880.

There are some wonderful tributes to this young man which you can read at >

"Otago Daily Times"
- 4 January 1882 - page 4 - The Late Joseph WOODCOCK
-- page 3 (same issue) - Inquest (into his death)

- "Otago Daily Times" -  2 January 1882 - page 2 - MONDAY 2 January
[Search on "Joseph Woodcock"  ... there may be further information also. ]
