Grenadier Guard........or not?
« on: Monday 18 May 15 19:59 BST (UK) »
Any tips on verifying whether an individual served in the Grenadier Guards over 100 years ago? Name was Alfred Harold GORIN, born circa 1888 in or near Gloucester. Am guessing he would have served, if indeed he did, between roughly 1906 and 1911, as by 1912 he was self-employed in Hereford.

Cheers.

There are no WW1 records for him that I could find. About two-thirds were lost in a fire in 1940. But if he went overseas he should be on the medal index cards and he is not.

If you want to risk £30 the Guards Archives have duplicate records. Why do you believe he was a soldier?

Gren Gds ( Grenadier Guards) also show up in the London Gazette, I can't get a hit for Gorin and Gren Gds

Thanks for the input, guys; much appreciated. Ken, his granddaughter told me he was in the Guards, but think I might have to cut my losses on this one; don't think it's worth £30 if I'm going to get a negative outcome!

There are five Guards regiments each with its own archivist. So it could be expensive. The Colstream also charge more than £30.
