If he was deaf and dumb and never married, but lived into middle or old age, one has to consider that he may have had to go into some sort of care, or gone to live with relations, who may not have been local.

Or, if he did stay in the same area and managed himself, we have to consider that whoever registered his death may not have known that he was really just an Eddie , and may have assumed he was actually an Edward and registered his death as such. If he had been deaf and dumb, and his parents etc had predeceased him, then this may not have been known to the informant at the death.
