Fry/Frye Family
« on: Wednesday 20 May 15 07:18 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone !

I'm in Canada and I am having an hard time to find some information about the Frye's family in England.
My ancestor was Nicholas Frye married to Isabel (???) and they probably had 3 children :
George Frye
John Frye
Margaret Frye

George Fry married Edith (???) and they had Nicholas Frye.
He married Mary Batherton (but it seems quite confused on Internet). She gave birth to Adrian Frye who came in America around 1650.

Everything before Adrian Frye is not sure. I don't know how to start to find more information before him. I don't have any factual dates (birth, death or marriage). They came Axbridge  in Somerset, I think.

Thank you very much,
Vanessa

Two places you can look:

1. FreeReg (.org.uk) has baptisms 1597-1905 for Axbridge, St John the Baptist.

2. Somerset OPC (wsom-opc.org.uk) has baptisms from 1562 to 1905.
Including 20 baptisms of Fry and Frye. But no Nicholas!

Parish Registers are by parish/church - so you need to be sure in which parish!

Thank you for both websites.
I think it will be really tough to get information about those people...
I'd like to know more but I guess it is too old to learn something new.

I found nothing in OPC in Somerset. It still vague with Adrian's (b. 1642 d.1692 who came in Kittery, USA in 1652) parents. It still vague between Mary Batherton and Margaret Bryant. It seems that William Frye (b. 1604 d.1642 from Compton Bishop, Somerset) was his father but something is wrong with him. Adrian's birth year and William death year is the same...

A Father can die before his son is born, so there is nothing wrong with a death for the Father in the same year.  Or is there some other objection?

Of course he can die in the same year but there's too many different records.
Some of them say something, the other another thing. I think I need to buy a subscription for Ancestry. I cannot see their documents.

Hi Vanessa (vfrye): Since your posting almost a year ago, how much luck did you have trying to cut through all the confusion with our Frye/Fry ancestors? Believe me! I could relate to your frustration :o! The problem stems from getting facts and dates mixed up for the father/son team of Adrian Sr. and Adrian Jr. and both getting "morphed" into one Adrian. Here are some basics which I hope will help

Adrian Sr. was born circa 1604 and married Margaret Bryant in 1623. She died circa 1643 before the family came to Maine circa 1660. Some sources say he married Hannah White (daughter of John White). That can be ruled since Hannah married Robert Allen. Adrian Sr. did NOT marry Sarah White (Hannah's sister). It's very likely Adrian Sr. never remarried after Margaret's death. Adrian Sr. died in 1695 at age 91.

Adrian Jr. was born circa 1640 (1635 also given). He married Sarah White (born circa 1642) in 1664. I descend from their son William (m. Hannah Hill). Although Adrian Jr. wrote his will in 1692 leaving everything to William for taking care of him and Sarah, his death was closer to 1709 and not 1692 or 1695 as given by many sources.

Over the past 15+ years I've been working on my family history (still a work in progress), I've dealt with unbelievable sloppy misinformation running rampant through ancestry.com and LDS websites. The way the Frye/Fry has been (and still is) handled is the worst by far in my family history.

Enough of my ranting. I'd like to hear how far you've come. If you have any question, I'll be glad to give it my best shot.

Mary

Hi Venessa

Try typing Ian Sage into Google & when you get to his home page click on parish registers as that will give you links to all the free parish register transcripts that he has found for Somerset
