67 Cherry Hinton Road, Cambridge
« on: Wednesday 20 May 15 17:21 BST (UK) »
I have baby born at 67 Cherry Hinton Road in July 1914. Does anyone know whether it was a nursing home or maternity home at that time? The mother had travelled home from the Far East to have her baby in England. Researcher would like to know more about the address & why the baby was born there.

According to this, it is a three bed terraced house. So unlikely to be a nursing home.

Perhaps she came to relations or friends.

Maybe an address search of the 1911 census would help?   It is, of course, possible that the numbering has changed over the years.

I think it is highly likely that the numbering system will have changed, as there were many little rows of cottages and a lack of use of numbers in preceding censuses

Cherry Hinton Road continues from Cherry Hinton to Cambridge:

Thanks for map and suggestion re census. Almost no street numbers on 1911 census .. mostly house names only but worth a try.

Hi Rosie,
To my knowledge no 67 Cherry Hinton Road has always been a house.
Maybe the mother of the baby was related to the family or they were family friends.

Thanks Nettie .. that was my impression, having street-viewed the house .. it didn't look suitable for a nursing home. But 1911 census doesn't yield any likely candidates for family or friends.

Hi Rosie,

You say the mother travelled home from the Far East to have the baby.

Do you know what month the baby was born, was the father in the military.

I was thinking that maybe the father was sent back to a hospital like the 1st Eastern General which was in Cambridge and his wife came back to the UK to be near him and she maybe lodged at no 67 whilst her husband was in hospital.

Hi Nettie - Thanks for suggestions. Baby (Joan Mary Rogers) was born July 1914 at 67 CHRd according to birth cert. Father was a doctor working in Malaya .. returned to UK October 1914 ... commissioned 1916. Mother was formerly a nurse at Addenbrookes. Her father-in-law was Vicar at Littleport, Ely ... but evidently (and surprisingly) she didn't go there to give birth. Wondered if she might have stayed with a former nursing colleague at CHRd .. but none listed in 1911 at least.

Regards/Rosie
