Can't find Death Registration James Collins RAMC d 1917 Home Theatre
« on: Thursday 21 May 15 08:58 BST (UK) »
So in the Soldiers who died in the Great War record set I've found

JAMES COLLINS
Service number   534453
PRIVATE
Royal Army Medical Corps
Territorial Force
Residence:   BRIXTON, LONDON
Enlistment: CHELSEA
Death 18 August 1917
Death place   Home
Theatre of war   Home

which ties in with this gravestone

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=24728222&ref=acom

which states that he died for King & Country on the same date.

However, I can't find a death registration either in the main GRO index or the GRO War Death Army Other Ranks (1914 to 1921) records.

Nor can I find any medal info. I realise he wouldn't qualify for most but would he qualify for the Territorial Force War Medal? Perhaps these aren't online?

Oh, in case it's of use, in 1911 he was a Licensed Victualler at the Hop Poles, Upper Tulse Hill, Brixton

Any ideas or help gratefully received!

Contact the GRO at Southport with all the details you have and they will do a search for you.

Also mention the entry KGarrad has found.

It is known that there are errors and omissions in all the GRO Iindexes which were all manually compiled.

Strange though that the citation on the CWGC implies he has a CWGC headstone but the link provided shows an 'ordinary' headstone. Maybe he is buried in one plot and mentioned in another.

Thanks both of you

I was only looking for a 2 year spread around a birth date of 1879 so didn't catch that one.

I'll give it a go

Being recorded on the CWGC site does not have to mean one of their headstones. My grandfather's death in Africa  1916 is recorded, he has a civilian headstone.

Home theatre would include Scotland and Ireland - have you checked their death registration indexes?

I've now been on the CWGC site and seen the Grave Registration report and the Grave Registration Register

Is the Memorial Order book something different?
