Insuire, Cupar
« on: Thursday 21 May 15 19:37 BST (UK) »
Hi there fellow Fifers

Here's a puzzler for you all from "Portrait and biographical record of Rockland and Orange Counties, New York. Containing portraits and biographical sketches of prominent and representative citizens of the counties. Together with biographies and portraits of all the presidents of the United States." New York and Chicago; Chapman Publishing Co., 1895

It's with reference to a John Peattie born at "Balcravie Castle, town of Largo, Fifeshire" on 2 January 1831 who took himself to Newburgh, New York, USA via London sometime after 1851 and died there on 6 February 1895.  He learned horticulture and botanical gardening with a relative, Robert Peattie, at "Insuire, near Cooper [sic], Fifeshire"

I've scanned the Ordnance Survey Six-inch 1st edition, 1843-1882 for anything resembling "Balcravie Castle" and/or "Insuire" but have drawn a blank.

Can anyone help?

Regards

From the 1882 Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland:

Balcruvie or Pitcruvie, an ancient castle, now reduced to one square tower, in Largo parish, Fife, on Keil Burn, 1 1/2 mile N by W of Lower Largo village. It was built by Sir John Lindsay, an ancestor of the Earls of Crawford.

The 1851 census (from FreeCEN) has Robert Peattie, 35, market gardener, born Largo, Fife, living with his wife and five children at West Port, Bonnygate, Cupar, Fife.

CH,  how about Inch something, Inchture? Skoosh.

Sorry Skoosh ... but Inchture is in Perthshire, halfway between Perth and Dundee.

I've got that GR.  I'm wondering now if "Insuire" was maybe the name of a house? Maybe I'm just clutching at straws!

Hi CF

Nothing useful unfortunately in this listing of place names in Cupar from 1854 www.scotlandsplaces.gov.uk/digital-volumes/ordnance-survey-name-books/place-names/Cupar?class=parish&county=Fife
