Hello,

I have learned that Christopher RUMP features in several State Government Gazettes, as under, but although I accessed those for Victoria no detail was found........there was a Peter RUMP incidentally.   The references are:

1:  NSW 1867;
2:  Queensland: 1873 and 1901: and
3:  Victoria: 1879 and 1880.

I wonder if anyone can help in explaining what these references consist of should it be possible.  I shall be very grateful for the smallest amount of information.   I have tried tracing this gentleman after he arrived in Australia (Williamstown) in 1847 as an "Exile" but have singularly failed to find any mention in TROVE, State BDM Indexes etc., so these State Government Gazettes are "the last chance saloon" ::) ::)

For the moment,

Tony

Hi Tony,

Pardon the pun, but you have been given a "bum steer".  The gazettes on subscription sites have been indexed by OCR and so any results with those words will appear.  If the search can't find those two names together it just finds any of the words on a page.  The word 'rump' comes up in those gazettes with reference to registrations of horse brands and markings on stolen horses.

Debra  :)

Here's the Victoria Government Gazette with its own inbuilt keyword search engine  :) and still no sighting of Christopher RUMP.

Good Morning,

Thank you for trying to help.........very much appreciated.

My only deduction is that "Findmypast", which gave me the link but no detail as I am not a subscriber, is telling "porky pies" or to be more critical Dundee's "bum steer" ;D ;D   I was tempted to take out a temporary month's subscription at £9.95 (AUD 19.03) to find the answers, but genuinely felt RootsChat would be more helpful, especially with any genealogy that could also be retrieved.   What a waste of money "Findmypast" would have been.

For the moment,

Tony

Exile? Do you mean convict?

There is a Christopher RUMP, born 1830 Norfolk, Alysham in the 1841 census and then in the 1851 census - was he sentenced for anything?

Could he have gone back to Norfolk and then died there in 1895 in Aylsham?

Hi,
Yes Christopher Rump (14) was convicted on 17th December 1844 and sentenced at Norfolk Circuit Court on 21st December 1844 for arson ( hay stack) and he plus 6 other involved received 15 years transportation.

Others were
George Dye
John Rutland
William Medlar
J Quantrel
Thomas Baker
Robert Parker.

Possibly transported on the Marion (3) leaving Spithead, 29th Sept 1847 and arriving in Victoria on 25th Jan 1848.

Gerry

Modified: Just to add that there were not 7 offenders involved in the case where Christopher Rump was found guilty and sentenced, his was a stand alone case of arson against his employer at Wiverton.   The 7 whom were sentenced on 21st December 1844 were for similar offences.

George Dye came out with Christopher Rump on the Marion 3.

The Melbourne Argus 28th Jan 1848 makes reference to the Marion arriving on the 25th via Hobart Town with 222 Exiles from the Millbank and Pentonville prisons.

So Christopher Rump was a Parkhurst Boy

Some of them went on to New Zealand as apprentices, but he doesn't seem to appear in the NZbdm or paperspast.
