Callander Estate and the McKenzieMain Connection
« on: Saturday 23 May 15 13:21 BST (UK) »
The Callendar estate was granted by the Crown to Sir William Livingston in 1345; his descendants became the Earls of Callendar and Linlithgow. However, this 8000-acre estate was subsequently purchased by William Forbes in 1783. One of his tenants was Edward McKenzie, who was a farmer as well as a successful carter.
His great-grandson, Edward McKenzie married Christina/ Christian Main, 1846. Glen and Parkhead farms, part of the Callendar estate farms, were occupied by the McKenzies; Glen farm was located on the south side of Falkirk and Parkhead was about one mile north.
In the 1841 census: David Main 25, was found farming at Easter Glen, along with Christina (Christian) Main 20.
David was the son of John Main/ Isobel Young (my ancestors). He married Margaret Oswald 1847, Falkirk.
Christian was the daughter of John Main/ Christian Main who married 24July 1819, Slamannan. The OPR record states: “John Main in this parish (Slamannan) and Christian Main in the parish of Falkirk on three days.”
I have had no luck determining the parents of either John Main or Christian Main and would appreciate hearing from anyone who might have some information on this couple.
