Where was John COLLING of Hutton Magna born?

Hi I'm trying to find the birthplace of John COLLING born C 1776.
He married Dorothy CHARGE in 1811 in Barton, Yorks., at which time he was resident in Hutton Magna, Yorks. In the 1841 census it just says he wasn't born in Yorkshire , and unfortunately he had died before the 1851 census. I have found a baptism in Darlington, Durham which fits with the date 1776 with his father being named George. But I haven't any proof that this is the right John COLLING. Can anyone help please?

Hi Keith

Looking at the BTs on familysearch the John you mentioned shows his father was a butcher. There is a burial Darlington St Cuthbert 14 Jan 1779 for John son of George Collins, butcher which might be the same family?

Thanks Shirl for trawling the BT's, I think that I can rule out that John (unless he had a sibling born after he died in 1779). I shall have look at the BT's myself to see if I can find another John born to George and his wife, although I'm not very hopeful, unless he had given his date of birth wrongly in the 1841 census.

Hi there

Census dates can be out by at least 5 years anyway and he may not have been baptised soon after birth. Freereg have transcriptions for Hutton Magna which is quicker initially, if you find something of interest you could then check with BTs.

thanks for reminding me about the 1841 census dates, I had completely forgotten (old age I suppose!).

 !! Found him at last!!
He was born in Heighington, Durham, then moved to Hutton Magna, Yorkshire, where he married Dorothy CHARGE. I don't think they had any children. When Dorothy died she was buried in her home village of Barton, and when John died he was buried in his home village of Heighington so any mourners must have had quite a journey.
I found him by looking at his will and then using a bit of detective work in the Durham Bishop's Transcripts (thank you Shirl for suggesting that).
If anyone is interested, his parents were John COLLING & Mary DUNN.
