Mary Packwood
« on: Monday 25 May 15 15:37 BST (UK) »
Mary Packwood married Jonathan Hart in Melchbourne in 1812 but I cant find a record of her birth in Melchbourne among the rest of the Packwoods born there at about that time. James Packwood and Elizabeth Clark had 7 children at about that time, but no Mary amongst them that I can find.

Any ideas anybody??

Many thanks,

Linda

Thank you very much Carole. I think I had 1789 as a possible birth date, and the other 7 Packwood`s were born around that time.

Have you checked the parish register or the transcript Linda, rather than relying on the IGI, which had a clean up a few years ago and deleted some extracted events where there was an identical member submission. There is a member submission for Mary's baptism on 26 Oct 1793.

There's also no baptism or marriage for William Packwood on the extracted IGI despite there being entries on member submissions. He emigrated to the US, so there's American interest in this family.

Hi David,
I haven't looked on the IGI, I was looking at the transcribed parish records on the Rushden site.

Thank you David for the information. I believe one of Mary`s sisters may have emigrated to the US.

William Packwood's baptism seems to have been entered in the PR as William Packer, although the Rushden site has his 1812 marriage as Packwood, which is missing altogether from the extracted IGI. He emigrated to New York state c 1830.

Hopefully someone might be able to check the BLARS transcript which has compared the PR with the BT (actually, the Rushden site transcript is copied from the BLARS transcript, but still worth checking). Whilst I place little/no reliance on IGI member submissions, the date of 26 Oct 1793 for Mary's baptism seems very precise to be an invention.

I don't think there can be much doubt about who Mary's parents were, as there was only one Packwood family in Melchbourne. It would be nice to prove it though! Who were the witnesses to her marriage to Jonathan Hart in 1812?

Hi Linda

When & where did James Packwood marry Elizabeth Clark?

Mary Hart on censuses 1841 to 1871 was born 1788, 1789, 1791 in Melchbourne & her death index in Bedford RD in Dec 1878 has her age 90. The first Packwood baptism to James & Elizabeth was 1790 so maybe she was baptised earlier elsewhere? Also who are parents of William Packwood who married Hannah Swift in July 1812?

Cheers
John

 Hi John

The Rushden site shows the marriage as taking place at Stanwick, Northants on 26 Sep 1785, botp.

As I mentioned below, I think William Packwood's baptism was in Melchbourne on 3 Sep 1786, but recorded as PACKER, the son of James and Elizabeth.

My first (second actually!) thought was the same as yours, that she was baptised elsewhere before they moved to Melchbourne, until I found William.

I'd like to know where the member submission date of 26 Oct 1793 came from, as it's not consistent with her census ages. She could of course have been a late baptism but that would be inconsistent with her siblings' baptisms, which all seem to have been done pretty promptly, although there's a big gap between 1786 and 1790 into which she'd fit very neatly - mind you, that 1793 date for her baptism would also just about work between 29 Apr 1792 and 5 Apr 1795, her siblings' baptisms either side.

Hi,
Many thanks for all your ideas on this one. Mary Packwood has been on the back burner for a while because I couldn't find a Melchbourne birth record. Although the Packwood family seemed to have a likely gap, there are so many possible birth dates.
