Elizabeth Powell 1851 census
« on: Tuesday 26 May 15 10:27 BST (UK) »
Can anyone find Elizabeth Powell (or Betty) in 1851? She was born about 1794 in Cam. She was married to William Powell. I have Elizabeth in 1861 and 1841 but I can't see her in '51 for some reason (is it just me???  ;D)

Thanks
Betty

I can only find one Elizabeth Powell with birthplace, Cam and in 1851 she was living at the same address as in 1861 - Spout House Lane, Cam.
She was Head, married [no husband living with her in either census], 68yrs, born Cam, Glouc;
Hannah Powell, daur, 17yrs, unmarried, Dressmaker, born Cam
Ellen Organ, lodger, 18yrs, unmarried, pauper, born Coaley;
Henry Whitfield, grandson, 4 yrs, born Hillsley.
Could this be the correct Elizabeth?

Yes that's her! Thank you so much!

She was Head, married [no husband living with her in either census], 68yrs, born Cam, Glouc;

Wonder where William got to? The 1841 census says he was born about 1796 in Gloucestershire.

Hello Betty,
Who would have guessed that there could be so many William Powell's in Gloucestershire! I have had a look but there are several of that name who are lodgers and I can't work out if your William could have been one of them. I don't suppose he was staying with one of his married children? Am I correct in thinking that at that time Weavers were having a hard time of it? He may have had to change occupation.
Any other clues you can give us? Do you have their marriage information?
In 1861 Elizabeth was 'married' but again no William. Was he with someone else?
Puzzles, puzzles!
Rae

I don't have a marriage record yet but they were probably married about 1816. They had eight children, all born in Cam:

Margaret - bapt. 1817
Samuel - bapt. 1819
Mary - bapt. 1820
Elizabeth - bapt. 1823
Isaac - bapt. 1825
Joseph - bapt. 1827
Grace - bapt. 1830
Hannah - bapt. 1833

Grace married John Whitfield in 1849 and died in 1858 which explains why little Henry Whitfield is living with Elizabeth in '61.

This could be their marriage in the Parish of Cam in the county of Gloucester, 1814:

William Powell of this parish and Betty Attwood of this Parish were married in this Church by Banns with Consent of Parents, this 14th day of February by me, William Fryer, Vicar.
signed: William Powell
           Betty Attwood [her mark]
In the presence of William Summers and Kezia Attwood [her mark].

Good find, Rae! This could be her baptism:

Betty Attwood
Bapt.15 June 1793 in Cam
Daughter of Samuel and Margaret Attwood
