Forgotten Fenian.
« on: Wednesday 27 May 15 11:05 BST (UK) »
I am trying to piece together any info i can get on Mercer Browne McDermott quoted by Joseph Denieffe as one of the most active workers in the cause of Irish freedom in the 1860s.
http://www.forgottenbooks.com/readbook_text/A_Personal_Narrative_of_the_Irish_Revolutionary_Brotherhood_Giving_a_1000502842/173
Mercer McDermott's life story is a short and sad one.

Mercer McDermott son of Terence McDermott married Hannah Kelly dtr of John Kelly in St Andrews 21 Oct 1860
http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/8a062d0427514
they had one known daughter Hannah in 1862
http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/fb1c250226933
Glasnevin shows that both Hannah Kelly/McDermott and her daughter Hannah died in 1862.
Glasnevin also shows that Mercer McDermott died in 1865 age 27.
I do not know where he was born circa 1838 but suspect Cork as there appears to be a death announcement in the Cork Examiner on the 4th of Dec 1865
http://www.irelandoldnews.com/obits/obidxmc.htm
as his death was registered in the Jan qtr of 1866 and the obit in the paper i presume there were other relatives looking after this.
Would like to know if possible can anyone find his obit or names of any relatives.

any help much appreciated just to document his story.

Dathai.

         Brilliant thank you

if only we could see the full transcription of the marriage to tie it all up but as you say no other combinations of the father and son names showing anywhere so it looks really positive.
Do you think i would get the Cork Examiner in Pearse St, Library ?

many thanks as usual for your help.

Something to bear in mind in light of names and location
There are two baptisms in Loughrea, Co. Galway

Anne McDERMOTT b Jun 22 1811; bap Jun 28 1811; F John; M Penelope BROWNE
Mercer McDERMOTT b Dec 20 1813; bap Jan 13 1814; F John; M Penelope BROWNE

as the Mercer you are looking at had the middle name Browne and it looks as if he had a sister Penelope
Kearney & Bourke/ Johns & Fox/ Mannion & Finan/ Donohoe & Curley
Byrne [Carthy], Keeffe/ Germaine, Butler/ McDermott, Giblin/ Lally, Dolan
Toole, Doran; Dowling, Grogan/ Reilly, Burke; Warren, Kidd [Lawless]/ Smith, Scally; Mangan, Rodgers/ Fahy, Calday; Staunton, Miller

Brophy Coleman Eathorn(e) Fahy Fitzpatrick Geraghty Haverty Keane Keogh Nowlan Rowe Walder

I haven't been into Pearse Street in a while but they had many of the newspapers available
A quick call to them would confirm - happy hunting!

Yes I think so

When you look at the possible siblings
There is a possible sister Penelope
There is a sponsor Marcus Browne
Mercer's own name is unusual and his middle name was Brown

If the couple John McDERMOTT and Penelope BROWNE had other family
One could have been a Terence born c1812 +/- 10 years approx
The children located in Galway City were born between 1832(?) and 1849
This would make Terence between 20 and 37 +/-
