Can anyone help with James Sturmey born in 1845 at Wareham - the son on Walter & Grace Sturmey.
In 1861 he was living with his parents at Stoborough, Wareham working as a carter.
After 1861 he just seems to disappear
Thank you

The only reference I can find is James Sturmey, Private, number 1885, 2nd Bn 11th (North Devonshire) Regiment of Foot. 1871 in Dublin. National Archives ref: WO 12/2928.
No age or place of birth noted. As far as I can see there was no one of that name born in Devon around that period.

There is a James Sturmey in the court records for Dorset. Sentenced to 4 months for "feloniously receiving  in Jul 1861.  While that may not have made him vanish it does give you somewhere else to look up and a life of crime can account for this, including the possibility of being sent "down under"

There is a newspaper report of the 1861 case involving James Sturmey. He was 39 so too old to be the James you are looking for. This James was sentenced to 4 months hard labour for stealing. Crime committed at Blandford.
